Methodology: The research design used in this study is the descriptive research to determine the most prevalent health practices in treating the common illnesses of the family. The sampling came from a total household of 565, 20% equivalent to 113 respondents who took part in this study. The main tool for data gathering was the checklist type questionnaire, which was provided with options that ranged from a scale of 5 to 1. Statistical strategies used were frequency and percentage distribution, mean and chi-Square. The data gathered was tallied, analyzed and presented in tabulated form. 1. Demographic Profile of the respondents 1.1 Age Profile Of the 113 respondents 46 or 40.71% are under the age bracket of 21 to 35 years old; 41 or 36.28% of them are in the age bracket of 36 to 65 years old and the remaining 26 or 23.01% belong to age bracket of 66 years and above. Majority are in between 21 to 35 years old. 1.2 Civil Status There are 97 or 85.84% of the respondents who are married; 12 or 10.62% are widow, while separated and live-in partnership both have 2 or 1.77%. Majority of the respondents are married. 1.3 Economic Status A count of 56 or 49.56% are earning 5,000 pesos and below per month; 42 or 37.17% have monthly earnings of 5,001 – 10,000 pesos; 8 or 7.08 are earning 10,001 – 15,000 pesos a month; 5 or 4.42% are earning 15,001 – 20,000 pesos a month and 2 or 1.77% have monthly earnings of 20,001 above. Majority of the respondents are earning 5,000 pesos and below per month (low income group) and a lesser number on the high income earning group. 1,4 Educational Attainment Out of 113 respondents, 30 or 26.55% are high school graduates; 22 or 19.47% are elementary undergraduates; 19 or 16.81% are elementary graduates; 14 or 12.39% are high school undergraduates; 13 or 11.50% are college degree holders; 10 or 8.85% are college undergraduates and 5 or 4.42 were able to finish vocational course. A greater number of respondents are high school graduates with only a few graduates of vocational, college undergraduate and college degree holders. 2. The Common Illness Occurring in the Barangay Buck Estate The top three common illnesses occurring in Barangay Buck Estate are headache, cough and colds, respectively. Headache ranks 1 with a weighted mean of3.08. Cough ranks 2 with a weighted mean of 3.06 and colds ranks 3 with a weighted mean of 3.05. These common illnesses are relative to each other. 3. The Preferred Treatment Modalities used by the Families The use of over-the-counter drugs with a weighted mean of 3.40 ranked as the highest preferred treatment modality; diet and nutrition with a weighted mean of 3.34 followed, and Consultation to Doctors and taking prescribed medication with a weighted mean of 3.27 ranked third. On the other hand, the least preferred treatment modality is the use of Acupuncture with a weighted mean of 1.01. 4. Test for Significant Relationship between the Demographic Profile of the Respondents and the Preferred Treatment Modalities. The null hypothesis of no significant relationship between the preferred treatment modalities and the demographic profile such as age, civil status and educational attainment is accepted, (Accept H.). While the null hypothesis of no significant relationship between the preferred treatment modalities and the demographic profile such as monthly income is rejected. (Reject H.)
Conclusions: After analyzing the findings of the study, the researchers drew up the following conclusions: 1. Based on the findings, majority of the respondents are young adults, married, belonging to low income group and most of them are high school graduates. This implies that the respondents per household utilized in this study are in their rightful age to understand the purpose of the study and to determine the prevailing common illnesses. Knowledge of couples can also be collaborated and weigh in seeking the appropriate modalities applicable in the treatment or management of common illnesses. Majority are earning less than the basic needs for the family, that in some instances, family healthcare are disregarded to give priority to other basic needs such as foods, clothing, education and shelter. 2. Findings showed that the most prevalent common illnesses experienced by the respondents are, headache, cough and colds. This may be due to the nature of their work. Most of the respondents are either farmers or sari-sari store owners (self-employed). 3. Findings showed that the most preferred treatment modality by the respondents is the modern method. This method includes the use of over-the-counter drugs and consultation and use of medicine prescribed by doctors. 4. Age, civil status and educational attainment of the respondents do not affect treatment modality preference significantly. The use of modern method was found to be the common preference among the respondents. Monthly income played a significant role in the way the respondents choose a treatment modality. During times when income levels are high, the respondents consult their doctors / seek medical advice. While at times when income levels are low, they resort to self-medication and avail of over-the-counter drugs in management of common illnesses.
Recommendations: The foregoing conclusions led the researchers to the following recommendations: 1. Although the results showed that most of the respondents resort to over-the counter drugs to treat common illnesses, it is best for them to seek remedy through non pharmacological treatment first (for the top three common illnesses headache, cough and colds )such as water therapy or drinking fluids rich in Vitamin C and deep breathing
