ABSTRACT :
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is a sudden death in infancy age under 1. Lot of studies and researches conducted in many countries in relate to SIDS. But it is still very rare, and the cause of it is still unknown. Because most cases of SIDS occur when a baby is sleeping in the crib, SIDS is commonly known as crib death.
According to the midwife of Barangay Salawag, there were 3 infants who died from a sudden death starting 2003 up to 2006. She said that the mothers don't have specific reason regarding the death of the infants. Because of this accident report, the researchers had decided to choose Brgy. Salawag as the locale of the study. It should not be disregarded, because it may result to reoccurrence of SIDS. The researchers choose to inform the mothers in regards about SIDS, for there are still mothers don't have any idea about the syndrome and even the causes of the occurrence of this. So, for the mothers to know and be aware of it, the researchers will conduct survey and interview, by giving questionnaires. The study aimed to determine the level of awareness and perception of selected mothers in Brgy. Salawag, Dasmarinas Cavite on SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
This study will be conducted in the second semester, school year 2007-2008. Measuring their awareness and perception will help in evaluating the kind of approach the researchers can give to the mothers. The researchers aims that the mothers of Brgy. Salawag will have that much idea or information about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and lessen the occurrence of this.
This study aims to determine and answer the following aspects: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: a. Age b. Educational attainment 2. What is the level of awareness of the respondents? 3. What is the level of perception of the respondents? 4. Is there a difference between the level of awareness and perception of the respondents? This chapter discussed research using descriptive method. Data has been collected through questionnaires and personal interview with the mothers in Filinvest Homes, Brgy. Salawag, Dasmarinas Cavite. This presents the research method, the locale of the study, the respondents, instrumentation, and the data gathering procedures. Of all the fears associated with early parenthood, none is greater than the possibility of an infant's unexplainable and sudden death. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) poses such a threat to seemingly healthy babies of all socio-economic and racial backgrounds under one year old. Preventive measures are important to lessen the occurrence of SIDS, which really affects the infants. And if this will not be recognized and addressed to mothers, the existence of this syndrome will continue to occur and it will be difficult to prevent without intensive family-based reprogramming. Early intervention and primary prevention is the key. Parenting behaviors that increase the likelihood of responsive, sensitive reactions to the cues and signals of babies need to be taught to the next generation of parents. Research supports the assertion that responsive parenting behavior is essential in establishing secure parent-child attachment relationship. The attachment parenting style of parenting is based upon responsive parenting. Breastfeeding, co sleeping, and baby wearing, hallmark practices within this style, are each attachment-promoting parenting behaviors. Commercially-inspired trends towards carrying babies in plastic car seats and strollers, rather than in arms, and providing babies with cow's milk formulas from plastic nipples, rather than holding the children close and nursing them, need to be seriously reevaluated in light of attachment theory and the emotional and physical best interests of babies. Each of the hallmark attachment parenting behaviors is well supported as being in the best interest of raising physically and emotionally healthy children. Breastfeeding is by far the best way to feed and nurture a baby. actually conducted to other country while in Philippines; it's rare, maybe because of financial problem. Every action of the parents may affect the condition of the infants either it may be positive or negative. Literacy level of the respondents has a great implication in the respondent's level of awareness, it is advantageous on the part of the mother that is a nurse or health care provider for they are already equipped with knowledge on how they could possibly prevent SIDS occurrence although it has been said that SIDS is unpredictable. Likewise to those who have a nurse relatives. Some of the respondents were able to get information through reading and media as well. But still, not enough for them to become fully aware of SIDS. Level of perception of the respondents differs according to their socio economic status and career they are engaged to. There are some who tend to ignore it believing that their parenting skills can cause no harm to their infants. Those who have high level of perception are already practicing proper handling, sedentary lifestyle and other techniques that could most likely prevent SIDS incidence. Based on the respondents' profile according to age, 1.25 % of the respondents fall to the ages 12-18; 11.25% falls to the ages 19-25, and the 87.5% falls to the ages 26 65. And for respondents' profile according to educational attainment, 15% were high school level, 22.5% high school graduates, 26.25% were college undergraduates and 39.25% were college graduate. According to the level of awareness of the mothers, the highest obtain score was 28.75% which falls to the average classification, this means that majority of the respondents has an average awareness concerning the SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The lowest obtain score was 6.25% which means that small percentage of the participants belongs to the low classification. And for the levet of perception, he highest obtain score was 41.25% which falls to the average classification, this means that majority of the respondents has an average perception concerning the SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The lowest obtain score was 12.5% which means that small percentage of the participants belongs to the low classification. Based from the overall result of the gathered data, the percentage on awareness is more than the percentage on perception for the classification of high, moderately high and moderately low. However the percentage on perception is more than the percentage of awareness for the classification of average and low. By using Pearson r, awarene there is a very small positive correlation between the level of awareness and perception. And as the level of awareness increases, level of perception also increases but still there's only very small correlation between the two. Although there is no definite cause of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the study focused on the preventive measure on how mothers can avoid the occurrence of SIDS. The attachment parenting style holds a great deal of promise for producing emotionally secure children. In a time when our culture seems to be facing a crisis of violence among our youth it seems imperative that we do more than simply wonder as to the cause of this problem. Instead we need to be willing to question our cultural parenting norms and the values which underlie this crisis. We need to be willing to look beyond the techniques and the child care methods which have been used for the past few generations and instead embrace a more time-honored and natural style of parenting, one where dependence of a baby on its parents is accepted because the parents trust that their children will grow up to become securely independent in their own time. Whether one is a humanist or a religious person, it is absurd to argue that the manner of child care a baby receives is irrelevant or that responsive care is not important. Human babies are explicitly designed to be cared for by their parents in a consistent and sensitive manner. Unfortunately, parenting behavior is not inborn, it must be taught. When a culture collectively abandons the mode of care that serves its babies best, that culture will continue to pay a price until it acknowledges its fearing mistake and corrects its ways. The instruction of tomorrow's parents about the importance of parent-child attachment and about specific parenting behaviors that promote secure attachments has the potential of being a vital part of the beginning of this acknowledgement process. The impact of this research to the mothers can influence their practice, on improving and be more cautious in taking care of the infants. Awareness and perception on this study is significant not only on the part of the mothers but also others, who doesn't have idea on this. After drawing the conclusions of the study, the researchers hereby make the following recommendations: 1. For the community to have a health teaching program that will help them understand the preventive measures about SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) occurrence. 2. For the mothers to become more aware that their parenting skills play an important role in molding the holistic being of their babies. 3. For the next researchers, they should be able to gather more related literatures and written studies regarding SIDS that will be beneficial to the community especially mothers. 4. And lastly, to come up with level two (2) research - comparative, that will
