Abstract:
Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a complex, labor-intensive, often life-saving process that requires a knowledgeable team to manage. Nurses play a critical role in caring for adults receiving MV. Therefore, they need to know about all aspects of providing ventilatory support. This article reviews the basics of MV, describes how mechanical ventilators operate, and discusses mechanical ventilator management and the practical aspects of caring for adults requiring MV.
