| Formatted contents note | Abstract:
`Implantable loop recorders (ILRs) are cardiac-monitoring devices that detect dangerous dysrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation (AF). This article discusses whether ILRs can prevent strokes in high-risk patients by detecting AF. Implantable loop recorders (ILRs), sometimes called insertable cardiac or implantable cardiac monitors, are small devices that detect abnormal electrical signals from the heart. ILRs can detect dysrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients with AF must take anticoagulation and monitor their heart rhythm to prevent thrombus formation and subsequent ischemic stroke. The condition is economically burdensome due to repeated hospitalizations for acute decompensated heart failure and strokes.
AF is a common cause of stroke. Each year, 795, 000 individuals experience a stroke in the US, of which 87% are ischemic and 23% are recurrent. This article discusses whether ILRs can help prevent strokes in high-risk patients by detecting AF. |
