ABSTRACT :
General Objective: The study was conducted to eliminate factors resulting to commonly committed clinical errors so that the performance of the student nurses will improve Specifically, the study aimed to: 1. To determine the commonly - committed clinical error of a student nurse. 2. To determine the causative factor that result to the commonly - committed clinical error. 3. To determine the direct relationship between the causative factor and clinical errors. 4. To draw the implications from the result of the study.
Methodology Descriptive research method was utilized to answer the research problem.Respondents of the study were the Third year BS Nursing Students of Olivarez College - Tagaytay S.Y. 2008 - 2009. A total of 100 sample respondents were included in the studies which were selected through simple stratified random sampling. A survey questionnaire was used in gathering the necessary information. The percentage distribution, mean, and weighted mean were used in presenting the first and second questions. The chi-square was used in analyzing the relationship between the commonly-committed clinical error and its causative factors. Scope and Limitation The main focus of the study is the determination of the causative factors and the commonly committed clinical errors – gender and significant differences of the gender to frequency of clinical errors and causative factors. The study covered only the Third year student -nurses S. Y 2008-2009 of Olivarez College - Tagaytay who were already exposed in the hospital setting of their RLE at the following medical institutions: General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital, St. Dominic Medical Center, M.V. Santiago Hospital, Dasmariñas Lying-in Center, Estrella Hospital, Cavite Medical Center, GMA Medicare. Conclusion The findings of this research revealed that the most common clinical error of a student nurse is misinterpretation of words/terms on chart while the most common causative factors that lead to clinical errors of the student - nurses are inadequate rest and poor penmanship of the physician. The research also concluded that there is significant relationship between commonly committed-clinical errors and causative factors. Recommendation For the nursing students. Nursing students need competitive mental status, they must be equipped with enough knowledge and at the same time they need to be prepared physically. They must have enough rest to enable them to think right during their everyday duty, since one of the most common causative factor that lead to clinical errors is inadequate rest. The researchers would like the nursing students to give emphasis on their physical health because it is as important as their patients' health, for them to give their best. For Hospital Staff and Clinical Instructors. Although nursing students are somehow very aware already in most of the daily activities, which include the words / terms on charts in the hospital setting, they still couldn't do it with a 100%, they make mistakes on chart reading due to staff's and clinical instructors' poor penmanship or misunderstood abbreviations by the staff and clinical instructors because there were times when the students couldn't get their clinical instructor's or the staff's attention, they would just believe on the word or terms as what they think it is, they would definitely end up doing or understanding those inappropriately. For the future researchers. The researchers would recommend further study on the same topic to provide more awareness for the nursing students..
