This study assessed the lifestyle of the geriatric residents as basis for community health programs. It specifically directed towards answering the following sub problems
1. What are the demographic data of the geriatric residents in Don Galo? a. age b. gender c. educational attainment d. eating patterns e. daily activities
2. What is the level of depression of the selected geriatric residents of Barangay Don Galo? 3. What health programs that could best benefit the geriatric residents?
The study used the descriptive method as a research design in this study. Here, the researchers described, recorded, analyzed and interpreted the results. The purpose of descriptive studies is to observe, describe and documents aspects of a situations as it naturally occurs and sometimes to serve a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory development.
Although there is considerable emphasis in scientific research on understanding what causes behaviors, condition and situations, researchers can often do little more than describe existing relationships without fully comprehending the complex casual pathways that exist.
Other descriptive studies are undertaken to describe what exist in terms of frequency of occurrence (or its presence or its absence) rather than to describe the relationship between variables. For example, an investigation may wish to determine the health care and nutritional practices of pregnant teenagers.
A. The ages of the respondents were group into four, namely a.) 60-64 years old with 19 or 38%, b.) 65-69 years old with 15 or 30%, c.) 70-74 years old with 10 or 20% and d.) 75 79 years old with 6 or 12%.
B. There are 23 or 46% of the geriatric residents in Barangay Don Galo are male, and 27 or 54% are female.
C. There are 26 or 52% of the respondents are elementary level, 22 or 44% are high school level and only 2 or 4% who attained college level.
Based on the aforementioned findings the following conclusions were drawn: 1.) Elderly individuals residing in Barangay Don Galo have good value for their health. 2.) Not all that ages find themselves worthless because large numbers of respondents have very good activities of daily living. 3.) Depression is most likely to happen among the elderly people. 4.) Community Health Programs should not just focus on the physical health and nutritional needs of the geriatric individuals but on their mental health as well.
Based on the aforementioned conclusions the following recommendations were drawn:
1.) Health Care Officials and Local Government Units should work hand in hand to come up with some seminars intended for elderly people on how to deal with depression, that in times that they have spare moments make their mind occupied by doing such profitable yet not that body weakening because they are not that strong to be able to do tiring leisure. E.g. vegetables/ ornamental plants growing, figurine painting etc.
2.) A greater value for health should also not be neglected; Health Officials should add more health programs for the older people in our countıy. They should advertise more on the supplements and nutritional importance of some foods that could help an aging individual maintain their strength. Out-reach programs and medical missions should also be done benefiting not just young age group but the elderly as well.
3.) Family education and teachings should also be done because the younger and stronger members of the family are those who are in charge of looking after their elderly. Letting their older member take part on any aspects of daily living helps a lot because that would only show that he/she is still part of the so called family..
